July 16, 2012 - I'm all out of subjects to use...

Dear Family,

 

What's up, champs??  Sorry, but this email's going to be another short one. Busy preparation day today.

 

I'm doing great! It's been scorchin' hot lately, but it doesn't bother me as much these days. I just wish that the clouds would unleash some rain on us these days. Gee whizz! I'm truly greatful that we have a car to use so we don't have to walk and bike everywhere. Sure, we still walk a ton, but it's nice to go back to the car and get a little cool air. Did you know that Elder Quinn's been in car areas his whole mission? He hasn't had to use his bike at all! The OTM is very much a car mission because of how big the areas are. Usually the only bike areas are in the cities, in the which the OTM has very few large ones.

 

It was an okay week for us. Well... I guess it was more of a week of extremes, I should say. Bummer of the week: Elder Quinn was sick for the 3rd week in a row with a really nasty cold. It's just starting to get a little ridiculous how often he's getting sick. Talk about a really bad immune system! Our numbers continue to suffer because of a lot of time spent sitting in the apartment. But hey, at least I got to write some letters, read my scriptures, and clean the apartment. I just want to get out there and work! It seems like we haven't had the time to work our tails off for a full week in forever.

 

Great news of the week: We picked up a new investigator named Barbara. She's actually a former investigator that - like many other investigators - had their records lost in the tornado. Her neighbors (the Pagans) are members and they told us to stop by. Elder Quinn stopped by with Elder Pope on an exchange and then I went over to teach her the Restoration a few days later with Elder Pope because Elder Quinn was sick. She's really nice, but she's had a lot of problems to deal with. She has a rough past and is a single mom, so life is pretty tough sometimes. Add to the load her son who has infinity health problems and she just doesn't know what to do. As we taught her the first lesson she just cried and cried because the Spirit was so strong. Our exchange was able to bear testimony and comfort her. Having a member with us was the best thing we could've ever done! He saved the lesson and he helped her feel the Spirit. We'll see how things go in the future.

July 9, 2012 - Hooray for Rain!

Dear Family,

It rained this week! From what I hear, pretty much every state in the country has been in desperate need of rain. I've always found it quite interesting and touching when people pray for rain in church, in lessons, at dinner, etc. It didn't rain for days and days, but it was enough to lift peoples' spirits here in Missouri. It has been getting so hot! But because of the rain, today is a bit cooler. What a nice break from the heat. Too bad it won't last forever...

I love the article you sent me, Mom. Every time I hear about the subject of Mormonism being brought up on a national stage it makes me giddy with excitement. Any news is good news! Sure, there are a lot of negative views on our church out there, but that just causes people to ask questions. We aren't teaching like crazy here in Joplin (though we will be next week), but people sure are asking questions. Walmart, gas stations, Subway... You name it, we get asked some pretty good questions. Some of them are quite funny :) Do you REALLY believe that Jesus and Satan are brothers?!?! Why yes, I do. hahahaha! So yes, Mom, I love those kinds of articles. Anything else going on in the world that has to do with the church? I'd love to hear what's going on.

It's been another good week. Elder Quinn was sick again for a couple of days, but we still taught some great lessons. Gosh, I worry about the guy's health sometimes... Luckily, he was healthy enough when it was game-time though. We had a really fun 4th of July in which we spent most of the day golfing and then doing service. We did a little bit of proselyting, but as I've said before, nobody really likes to see us on holidays. President Merkley would always tell us that it's a great opportunity to meet families and teach a lot of lessons, but from my experience holidays are some of the worst days to knock on a door. But don't worry, that doesn't stop us. We just try to be more effective and smart in our work on holidays. Service is definitely one of those ways. We helped some people move into their new house and in return they took us to get some BBQ. Score! Golfing was a lot of fun, but we definitely weren't very good. Bro. Kartchner and Bro. Tucker were nice enough to invite us to the Briarbrook Community 4th of July Scramble (if you don't know what a scramble is, google it), but in the end I think they were expecting us to be a little better than we were. It's okay though, we all had fun, but we sure didn't win the competition.

On Friday, we met President Shumway and his wife for the first time in Springfield. We were all wondering beforehand we he was going to be like. Some elders were worried that he was going to be a stickler for the rules. Isn't that ridiculously funny and ironic?? But as zone conference started and the both of them spoke, I instantly was a big fan of the Shumways. I thought that I was going to be comparing him to President Merkley the whole time, but in the end there was no comparison at all. There didn't need to be! P Merk and P Shum are two totally different people, but both are powerful and spiritually in-tune. I already trust President Shumway with all I've got. He's quite the intense guy, if you ask me. He laid down the law on obedience and such, but he touched our hearts with his testimony of the Savior and of this work. One minute he'd blaze our eyebrows right off, and the next he'd have us tearing up with feelings that come through the Spirit. What a man! He's got me even more pumped to just hit it hard every single day from 10am to 9:30pm. Here are some of my favorite quotes from President Shumway already:

-"Be fanatically obedient. Irritate your companion with your obedience!"
-"Nobody likes a dull, disillusioned cry baby."
-"Praise Allah. You bet. I'm ready" <--- This one's probably my fave. This was taken from when he was talking about how he wants us to put him to work as a mission president. He wants us to set up appointments at universities, clubs, events, etc. for him to talk about our faith and to answer questions. Isn't that legit?! He's utterly brilliant, I can tell. Somebody mentioned something about him going to a mosque or something, and that's when he said that quote. Hahahaha

So, yeah. I like the new guy. You can tell that Sis. Shumway is totally a greenie, but hey, she reminds me of Mom with her kindness and happiness.

This week we taught Shelby twice in Bishop Hoffman's home. Both lessons were fantastic! She is so so so ready to be baptized. We taught her the Plan of Salvation and everything just clicked into place. She always thought that there was more than just Heaven and Hell, so the kindoms of glory were no problem. Last night we ate dinner with the Hoffmans and then taught her the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It was so perfect! Sis. Hoffman was able to bear her testimony and Shelby totally cried. She knows it's true :) Just imagine a super classy and attractive woman breaking down into tears because of a simple testimony. Gosh, I love the Gospel! The coolest part of the lesson for me though, came near the end as I was bearing my testimony. I suddenly had the strongest confirmation in my heart that our family could be forever. It was so short and so simple, but it was so strong. I know that I already have a testimony, but it was right there in that happy moment with Shelby and the Hoffmans that I knew without a doubt that I could never ever deny this Gospel. It's kind of intimidating to think about the consequences of that, but at the same time it was very satisfying to know that I've come to that point in my life where I just simply can't deny it. Hot diggety!!!

We picked up a new family this week named the Loftons. They should be pretty solid in the future because they were so nice and have a ton of questions. Yessssssss (Kip fist pump). We also had an excellent lesson with Ashley (who I mentioned texted us out of nowhere and wanted to meet. 40-day fast miracle!). She'd been anti'd recently, but we helped resolve her concerns and she said she's come to church. Bingo!!!

Golly, I'm sure loving Joplin right now. I can't wait to tell you more stories from this week. We're going to work harder than ever! And this week we don't have to worry about zone conferences and such. Hopefully Elder Quinn doesn't get sick again... Have a good one, y'all!

July 2, 2012 - 4th of July

Dear Family,

First of all, Mom I love how you referred to my year mark as my "hump day." Send me a camel, will you? I can't believe I'm almost halfway done! But at the same time I can't believe I'm only halfway done. Sheesh.

So what are y'all up to this 4th of July? This Wednesday should be a good one for us. We'll start off the day by going golfing with a nonmember at 7:30 in the morning. If it weren't such a long story, I'd tell you why this former member of the church who was married in the temple, went on a mission, has kids at BYU, etc. had his name removed from the church. Sad, huh?! But he's awesome and he attends church each week and really likes us. We feel like he'll get rebaptized someday in the near future because he totally knows it's true. For now we're fellowshipping him like crazy. Golf is an excellent way to do that and it was HIS idea!! Win win. We'll also be helping someone move and eating enough BBQ to make ourselves sick. Don't worry parents, I won't get fat.

This week was kind of a tough one because Elder Quinn was really sick. We think that he got heatstroke really bad. For like 3 days in a row he slept in until afternoon. It was bad news. But he's totally okay now and as happy as ever. Missionaries get sick. It happens. But we still taught some great lessons!

Best news of the day? We set a date with Shelby for the 4th of August!!!!!!! Shelby - with the help of Cody (Bishop's son who's her boyfriend. Return missionary) agreed to meet with us on Thursday for the first time and receive the discussions. Cody informed us beforehand that she was very nervous and didn't want to have to answer too many questions. But as the lesson started, she totally relaxed as she realized that we weren't going to drill her for answers. Elder Quinn taught about the Restoration excellently and I talked about how the gospel is for us and for our happiness. It was so perfect! We both instantly knew that we needed to invite her to be baptized on a specific date (we talked about it afterwards). Elder Quinn asked her if she'd be baptized on the 4th and I immediately knew that it was right. And guess what she said?? "That's the plan. Time is irrelevant. I know this is for me." *Angels singing* We're meeting with her tomorrow. She's already asking awesome questions about the priesthood and the temple and stuff. Oh yeah, baby!!!!!!!!!!

I know that the 40-day fast that we're holding with the ward is already blessing us tremendously. Shelby totally fell into our laps. An investigator that 2nd ward is teaching actually lives in our area and has a date for the 4th as well. Ashley texted us out of nowhere and wants to meet tomorrow. Every member who's fasted so far has had a missionary experience. SO many miracles!! I'm just beside myself with happiness. It's not like I lack faith big-time, but I never knew that a flippin' 40-day fast could do so much in just a week! We're not even 1/4 the way done! I know for a fact that fasting works and that the Lord blesses us with opportunities when we put forth our effort. What an awesome experience.

Every day just keeps getting better and better. Well, we still have our slow days, but we just have an urgency that I've never felt before. I want to just shout to everyone in Joplin! But sadly, there is someone who's still struggling. Remember my old pal Elder Jensen? He's been out almost a year now and still hasn't had a baptism. Their most recent heart break happened when an investie with a date for the 7th (this Saturday) just flipped out and dropped them. Just like that. Elder Jensen is kinda struggling because he thinks he's doing wrong. I just feel so depressed because if there's anyone who deserves a baptism, it's him. He's a hard worker and a great guy! Pray for Elder Jensen. He needs it. I remind him that numbers don't matter, but it still stinks. Missions are tuff!

June 25, 2012 - Hi

Dear Family,

 

Hey guess what? I met a less-active guy named Willie the other day! He's a really cool African American guy who played college football years ago. How awesome is that?!

 

I'm doing great, by the way. Thanks for always asking how I'm doing. I'm happy to know that y'all care :) Mom, sorry if I don't include very many spiritual experiences in my emails. I think I just forget all of the time and I'm not that good at story-telling like April is. Just remember to not get your expectations too high. Miracles happen every week for me, but they're often things like someone's finally home or someone doesn't slam the door in my face. That sort of thing.

 

But hey, this week really was an awesome week though! Despite mega hot and humid weather, we taught a fair amount of lessons and did a lot of tracting. I do have to say that tracting is a lot more fun when you have a motivated companion who's not afraid to talk. Elder Quinn is really good at testifying and teaching right on someone's doorstep, even when they may seem not very interested. The back of our planners are chuck full of potentials that we picked up from our hours of tracting recently. We're working harder than ever and it's really paying off. And guess what? We had transfer calls on Saturday and Elder Quinn is staying!! Elder Quinn admitted that he was kinda burnt out with Joplin (he's been here like 7 months already) and that he wanted to move on, but no call came on Saturday night. I could tell that he was really mad at first, but he's okay now. I think one of the reasons why he isn't too bummed is because I'm here haha ;) I know I've said this before, but we're really becoming good friends. That's the great thing about a mission - Elder Quinn and I probably wouldn't be friends back home because we're so different, but out in the mission field we can be best of friends. That's the same deal with Elder Jensen. By the way, his ankle is doing a little bit better, but he's still down and out. It's not broken, but it's going to take a while to get fully healed.

 

Great news - on Saturday before transfer calls we had an appointment with a guy named David in the Webb City ward. We met him at the Maxwell's home (members) and taught him about the Word of Wisdom and the Law of Chastity. He was very receptive and remembered a lot from his previous lessons with missionaries. He kinda got lost on the radar for a while, so it was the first time I met him. But during the lesson the Spirit was SO strong! He was totally eating everything up and was willing to give up his tea and coffee in an instant. And at the end of the lesson, Elder Quinn committed him to be baptized!! The best part is that he wants to be baptized on the 4th of July. I'm pretty sure that the 4th of July is going to be the best day ever this year :)

 

This week we also picked up a new investigator named Ladonna. She's been taught before, but was kinda lost in the tornado. We taught her outside her house on Thursday and went over the Restoration with her. Do you know what's cool? Elder Quinn quoted Joseph Smith's first vision account word for word and I could just see the happiness in her eyes. There's something about those particular words that is so powerful. It works every time. Before my mission I just thought that the JSH account of the first vision was just a cool reference, but nowadays it's like we have to include it. We know how well it invites the spirit when we say it, so we say it every time we teach the Restoration. It never fails! She agreed to be baptized when she comes to a knowledge that the church is true. Hooray!! More great news - Shelby decided to forego finishing the Book of Mormon before meeting with us and set up an appointment with us on Thursday at the Hoffman's house. Holy cow! Originally she wanted to finish the Book of Mormon, have Cody answer her questions, and basically know it's true before even meeting with us. I guess the Spirit really has been working on her recently. She's currently in Alma in her reading right now! We're pretty sure she'll want to be baptized real soon :)

 

The only bad news from the week is that Heath doesn't want to meet with us anymore. He seemed so golden too! But his parents are going through a divorce right now and he realized that this whole Mormon thing is a lot more than he thought it was. We just think that he was interested in Samantha (yeah, a member girl). At least we can be happy with the big fat seed we planted in his heart. He'll come around someday.

 

I was reading in Helaman 5 the other day and found something kinda cool that I thought I'd share with you real quick. in verses 5-8 it talks about how Nephi and Lehi remember the counsel their father Helaman gave them. He tells them to keep the commandments and to remember Nephi and Lehi of old - where their names come from. He tells them to remember their good works and to be like them and do their own good works and to lay up treasures in heaven. I couldn't help but think of my own name and where it came from. I have the name of my father and fathers of old, and I should be proud of it. I can remember the stories of their good works and amazing lives, including the awesomeness of my own father. It's important that I do my own good works just like my dad and follow his example. Thanks for being amazing Dad :) I hope I can carry your name like a champ.

 

The future looks bright, folks! I'm so so so so happy that Elder Quinn is staying (and so is the ward. They LOVE him). We're going to have an excellent 2nd transfer together and I know that more amazing things are going to happen.

Dear Family,

 

How's it going? Do you know what I can't believe? That Reggie's coming home soon! It seems like I just saw him at his farewell. What a man, extending his mission for another month. I would totally do the same thing if y'all let me. I'm just having too much fun out here. No offense, but I just never want to go home. So many missionaries get "trunky" nowadays, but I'm as fully invested as ever. This whole mission thing is quite the cool gig :) It's funny how I don't really know what to say in my emails even though there's a lot happening. Haha whenever Monday rolls around, the only thing I can think about telling you about is the latest BBQ I've tried. Joplin has some excellent resaurants. There's nothing quite like some good smoked meat... Yummmmmmmm...

 

Amber got baptized on Saturday! What an exciting day! It's taken a long time for Amber to finally get ready for baptism, but she was totally ready. She seemed a little nervous leading up to the 16th, but as it got really close she was super stoked. She looked so happy at the baptism :) Frankie (her cousin) baptized her and Bro. Pulsipher confirmed her yesterday at church. I was kind of expecting something crazy to happen at the baptism because every baptism I've been to on my mission something's gone wrong. But it went very smoothly. She only had to be dunked once and Frankie said the prayer right :)

Hey I've totally been to fairlds.org before. We've been given permission to check it out every now and then. I really do think that it's a good resource. I've told many people before that though I may not have all the answers, there is an answer for EVERY question out there. You just have to go to the right source. Don't Google Mormonism!!! It's just like they say - don't go to the Chevi dealer to find out about the Ford.

 

This week I got to go on an exchange with Elder Jensen in Pittsburg. Best day of my life! He sprained his ankle really bad recently so we just sat in the apartment all day, but it was still fun. It was just like old times :) We also went on an exchange with the Assistants, so that was fun. Besides that, this week was kinda slow. We spent a lot of our precious time driving to Arkansas and other places in Missouri to get stuff on our car fixed. It was really frustrating actually. I was hoping that we could fix the car here in Joplin, but I guess we have to take it to places far away. I did get to see a bunch of different missionaries though. And Arkansas! I miss Arkansas so much. The more time passes, the more I realize how much fun I had in Springdale. What a great place to be trained. And I wonder how Elder Navratil is doing these days in Canada. Maybe he's married...

 

I'm still working my tail off these days. It's sure paying off. We have countless potential investigators that we're waiting to teach and we've picked up a cool family to teach. The mom basically already knows the Book of Mormon is true and so we're stoked to start teaching them. It's just hard to get a hold of them. So many people are like that around here! Whether they're interested or not, people just don't answer phone calls or their door.

 

Cool experience of the week: I went to a bible study with a bunch of people from the Church of God. They were very very nice and we read from 1 John chapter 2 or 3 (I think). We talked about how we need to put worldly desires behind us and do what it takes to please God and make it to heaven. It was kinda weird at times, and the preacher talked way too much. They were great people, but I kept on wanting to say stuff about the Restoration and Eternal Life and such. It wasn't exactly the right environment for it though. They're just missing some key information! Gosh, I love the Book of Mormon so much. The Bible is so cloudy sometimes. The people there were all about Holiness. It was starting to bug me. Talk about vain repetitions...

 

Anyways. I gotta go. I don't really remember what else happened this week anyway. It was good though! Sorry I'm so boring. Life just flies by at a million miles an hour. Love you!

June 11, 2012- Howdy Partners!

Dear Family,

 

Our schedule is kinda crazy today so I have to email you early this morning. You probably won't email me before I get this sent off, but that's okay. But I did get the package you sent me! Thanks so much! I flippin' love the tie. I wore it yesterday to church with my blue suit. I am one classy guy ;) And thanks for the card reader. I would be attaching pictures right now, but my camera's charging. Haha maybe someday you'll get some pictures from me. Overall it was just an excellent birthday. I got more letters than I have at any other time my whole mission (that's not saying a lot), so I feel loved. A member baked me a banana cake and bought me lunch too. The banana cake was just the way we made it back home! It was awesome.

 

It's been quite a good week for the work as well. We picked up a couple of new investigators through members. Let me just say right now - member referrals are THE BEST. The first one's name is Shelby. Shelby is the girlfriend of Bishop Hoffman's son, Cody. Cody just barely got home from a mission, so he kinda laid down the law when they got together. Surprisingly, Shelby has come to church 4 weeks in a row now and is very interested in learning more. She's told Cody that she is learning for herself, and not for him. We haven't officially started teaching her yet, but we will soon. The other new investigator is Heath. Heath is the friend of a member in the 2nd ward, but he'll be moving into our ward soon so that's why we're teaching him. He's just a bit older than me. We first met Heath when he helped us move some stuff at the member's home. He didn't say much to us and I have to admit that I judged him unfairly. First of all, he's absolutely ripped (like body builder hugeness), so I thought that he was rollin' the 'roids. Secondly, he has tattoos wrapping up his arms. I mean, I've taught people like that before, but I just thought to myself that maybe he wasn't the best guy if ya know what I mean. But to my pleasant surprise, he's totally a great guy! Heath informed the member that he was interested in learning about our church, so we met with him yesterday after church. He's golden! He's a really shy guy and he's very nice and well-mannered. And he's very much searching for truth in his life right now. He just wants to be good and do good. Boy did I feel stupid. I already love the guy so much! He said he'd be baptized when he came to know that it's true. He grew up in a Christian church, and his dad is throwing all sorts of anti at him. I used to get mad at that kind of thing, but nowadays it just makes me sad. So many people are filled with misinformation. Google certainly doesn't help. We're going to meet with Heath next Sunday, and I really think that we could set a date with him. Hooray!

 

It sure feels good to be busy. Some missionaries like to joke around and say comments like, "Elder Atkin, do you guys get to just sit around and be lazy 'cause you're zone leaders? That must be so cool!" I glady reply, "Nah, dude. I worked my butt of today." And it's very true. Elder Quinn and I hate to sit around. We've been contacting a lot of old referrals and former investigators. We've done quite a bit of tracting already. Yesterday we were seeing people from the time we left church until bedtime. By golly, I'm so tired! I was nodding off multiple times during church. Church is still super good though. The members here are so awesome! I still don't know a lot of them, but there are some powerhouse testimonies in Joplin.

 

Amber is set to be baptized this Saturday! Elder Lund interviewed her before Frankie's Eagle court of honor and she was totally ready. She still struggles with some concepts because of her mild special needs, but she knows the Gospel is true. After her interview we attended Frankie's court of honor and I got to sit in the Eagle's nest for the first time in a while. It was a picture perfect program. To everyone's surprise, Frankie announced at the end that he had received his mission call in the mail the day before and that he was going to open it with all of us. Everyone flipped out with excitement. And guess where he's going? Pocatello Idaho Spanish speaking!! I was ridiculously awesome. He's already stoked to go. What a great young man!

 

Pretty soon we're going to start a 40-day fast with the ward to help with the missionary effort. Elder Quinn and I are confident that miracles can happen if we have a family fasting for our success each day for 40 days. It's going to be epic! After the 40 days we're planning on having an invitation Sunday where everyone invites their friends and really good speakers are picked. Joplin's going to be on fire with missionary work!

Dear Family,

 

I'm so tired of not getting that much time to email! I guess you'll just have to be okay with my short emails until we figure something else out. 4 elders and 1 computer with limited time equals lame sauce. Sorry! And don't worry about not getting an email to me. It's okay :) I knew that you might be busy. I'm okay, I'm not a baby haha

 

Today Elder Quinn and I are heading down to Tulsa for Zone Leader Council at the mission home. It'll be fun to pass through Owasso and see some familiar sites. Do you know what's cool? There are 3 other elders from my MTC district that are zone leaders right now. Yeah, that's how awesome we are ;) It ought to be an interesting ZLC this time around because President Merkley is going home at the end of this transfer. I'm so sad! He's seriously one of the most spiritually strong people I've ever met. He's very quoteable and very likeable. Some elders complain about him behind his back, but nobody will deny how amazing he really is. President Shumway will have big shoes to fill.

 

The work is going well here in Joplin. There is SO much potential! I'm just waiting for things to burst wide open. We just keep getting caught up in zone leader duties and service and such. But I really have a feeling that this week will be a good one. We handed out about 40 Book of Mormons at church the past couple of weeks and a lot of members are committing to talk to friends. Cool stuff! Tons of members have friends/family that they're working on. Amber is probably going to make it to her baptism on the 16th, so we're stoked about that. We met with Tom this week and went over some of his concerns on being baptized. He really opened up and we were able to talk comfortably. Tom's had multiple baptismal dates, but we think that he'll come around soon. Heck, he's attended church for 3 years in a row now!

 

Hmmm... what else is going on around here... I don't really know what to say. Especially since I don't have much time left. Just know that I'm happy when I'm busy and I'm so so so excited about the work in this area. So many cool people! Joplin has some ghetto parts, but it also has some ridiculously rich neighborhoods. I like to be a part of both worlds. Elder Quinn and I are getting along quite well, despite my snoring. Gee wizz I flippin' hate snoring! It's kind of embarassing. Besides that, we're best pals.

 

Don't worry too much about my B-Day. If you send anything at all, send my Jon Schmidt CDs (and maybe some new ones), I could use a yellow or orange tie (I don't have any of that color), and an SD card-reader would be great. I just want pictures of the family too! I know that I haven't really sent any lately, but if I had a card reader I totally could. I just wish I could have a hug from y'all for my birthday, that's all...

 

The Gospel is true, my fellow family members. It's sure great to be serving the Lord at this time and I just hope that I'm being the best I can be. Pray that your son won't be afraid to share his testimony. I still get scared! Especially when it seems like I'm not having success.
