June 25, 2012 - Hi

Dear Family,

 

Hey guess what? I met a less-active guy named Willie the other day! He's a really cool African American guy who played college football years ago. How awesome is that?!

 

I'm doing great, by the way. Thanks for always asking how I'm doing. I'm happy to know that y'all care :) Mom, sorry if I don't include very many spiritual experiences in my emails. I think I just forget all of the time and I'm not that good at story-telling like April is. Just remember to not get your expectations too high. Miracles happen every week for me, but they're often things like someone's finally home or someone doesn't slam the door in my face. That sort of thing.

 

But hey, this week really was an awesome week though! Despite mega hot and humid weather, we taught a fair amount of lessons and did a lot of tracting. I do have to say that tracting is a lot more fun when you have a motivated companion who's not afraid to talk. Elder Quinn is really good at testifying and teaching right on someone's doorstep, even when they may seem not very interested. The back of our planners are chuck full of potentials that we picked up from our hours of tracting recently. We're working harder than ever and it's really paying off. And guess what? We had transfer calls on Saturday and Elder Quinn is staying!! Elder Quinn admitted that he was kinda burnt out with Joplin (he's been here like 7 months already) and that he wanted to move on, but no call came on Saturday night. I could tell that he was really mad at first, but he's okay now. I think one of the reasons why he isn't too bummed is because I'm here haha ;) I know I've said this before, but we're really becoming good friends. That's the great thing about a mission - Elder Quinn and I probably wouldn't be friends back home because we're so different, but out in the mission field we can be best of friends. That's the same deal with Elder Jensen. By the way, his ankle is doing a little bit better, but he's still down and out. It's not broken, but it's going to take a while to get fully healed.

 

Great news - on Saturday before transfer calls we had an appointment with a guy named David in the Webb City ward. We met him at the Maxwell's home (members) and taught him about the Word of Wisdom and the Law of Chastity. He was very receptive and remembered a lot from his previous lessons with missionaries. He kinda got lost on the radar for a while, so it was the first time I met him. But during the lesson the Spirit was SO strong! He was totally eating everything up and was willing to give up his tea and coffee in an instant. And at the end of the lesson, Elder Quinn committed him to be baptized!! The best part is that he wants to be baptized on the 4th of July. I'm pretty sure that the 4th of July is going to be the best day ever this year :)

 

This week we also picked up a new investigator named Ladonna. She's been taught before, but was kinda lost in the tornado. We taught her outside her house on Thursday and went over the Restoration with her. Do you know what's cool? Elder Quinn quoted Joseph Smith's first vision account word for word and I could just see the happiness in her eyes. There's something about those particular words that is so powerful. It works every time. Before my mission I just thought that the JSH account of the first vision was just a cool reference, but nowadays it's like we have to include it. We know how well it invites the spirit when we say it, so we say it every time we teach the Restoration. It never fails! She agreed to be baptized when she comes to a knowledge that the church is true. Hooray!! More great news - Shelby decided to forego finishing the Book of Mormon before meeting with us and set up an appointment with us on Thursday at the Hoffman's house. Holy cow! Originally she wanted to finish the Book of Mormon, have Cody answer her questions, and basically know it's true before even meeting with us. I guess the Spirit really has been working on her recently. She's currently in Alma in her reading right now! We're pretty sure she'll want to be baptized real soon :)

 

The only bad news from the week is that Heath doesn't want to meet with us anymore. He seemed so golden too! But his parents are going through a divorce right now and he realized that this whole Mormon thing is a lot more than he thought it was. We just think that he was interested in Samantha (yeah, a member girl). At least we can be happy with the big fat seed we planted in his heart. He'll come around someday.

 

I was reading in Helaman 5 the other day and found something kinda cool that I thought I'd share with you real quick. in verses 5-8 it talks about how Nephi and Lehi remember the counsel their father Helaman gave them. He tells them to keep the commandments and to remember Nephi and Lehi of old - where their names come from. He tells them to remember their good works and to be like them and do their own good works and to lay up treasures in heaven. I couldn't help but think of my own name and where it came from. I have the name of my father and fathers of old, and I should be proud of it. I can remember the stories of their good works and amazing lives, including the awesomeness of my own father. It's important that I do my own good works just like my dad and follow his example. Thanks for being amazing Dad :) I hope I can carry your name like a champ.

 

The future looks bright, folks! I'm so so so so happy that Elder Quinn is staying (and so is the ward. They LOVE him). We're going to have an excellent 2nd transfer together and I know that more amazing things are going to happen.

Dear Family,

 

How's it going? Do you know what I can't believe? That Reggie's coming home soon! It seems like I just saw him at his farewell. What a man, extending his mission for another month. I would totally do the same thing if y'all let me. I'm just having too much fun out here. No offense, but I just never want to go home. So many missionaries get "trunky" nowadays, but I'm as fully invested as ever. This whole mission thing is quite the cool gig :) It's funny how I don't really know what to say in my emails even though there's a lot happening. Haha whenever Monday rolls around, the only thing I can think about telling you about is the latest BBQ I've tried. Joplin has some excellent resaurants. There's nothing quite like some good smoked meat... Yummmmmmmm...

 

Amber got baptized on Saturday! What an exciting day! It's taken a long time for Amber to finally get ready for baptism, but she was totally ready. She seemed a little nervous leading up to the 16th, but as it got really close she was super stoked. She looked so happy at the baptism :) Frankie (her cousin) baptized her and Bro. Pulsipher confirmed her yesterday at church. I was kind of expecting something crazy to happen at the baptism because every baptism I've been to on my mission something's gone wrong. But it went very smoothly. She only had to be dunked once and Frankie said the prayer right :)

 

Time out - you just emailed me! Hooray!

 

Hey I've totally been to fairlds.org before. We've been given permission to check it out every now and then. I really do think that it's a good resource. I've told many people before that though I may not have all the answers, there is an answer for EVERY question out there. You just have to go to the right source. Don't Google Mormonism!!! It's just like they say - don't go to the Chevi dealer to find out about the Ford.

 

This week I got to go on an exchange with Elder Jensen in Pittsburg. Best day of my life! He sprained his ankle really bad recently so we just sat in the apartment all day, but it was still fun. It was just like old times :) We also went on an exchange with the Assistants, so that was fun. Besides that, this week was kinda slow. We spent a lot of our precious time driving to Arkansas and other places in Missouri to get stuff on our car fixed. It was really frustrating actually. I was hoping that we could fix the car here in Joplin, but I guess we have to take it to places far away. I did get to see a bunch of different missionaries though. And Arkansas! I miss Arkansas so much. The more time passes, the more I realize how much fun I had in Springdale. What a great place to be trained. And I wonder how Elder Navratil is doing these days in Canada. Maybe he's married...

 

I'm still working my tail off these days. It's sure paying off. We have countless potential investigators that we're waiting to teach and we've picked up a cool family to teach. The mom basically already knows the Book of Mormon is true and so we're stoked to start teaching them. It's just hard to get a hold of them. So many people are like that around here! Whether they're interested or not, people just don't answer phone calls or their door.

 

Cool experience of the week: I went to a bible study with a bunch of people from the Church of God. They were very very nice and we read from 1 John chapter 2 or 3 (I think). We talked about how we need to put worldly desires behind us and do what it takes to please God and make it to heaven. It was kinda weird at times, and the preacher talked way too much. They were great people, but I kept on wanting to say stuff about the Restoration and Eternal Life and such. It wasn't exactly the right environment for it though. They're just missing some key information! Gosh, I love the Book of Mormon so much. The Bible is so cloudy sometimes. The people there were all about Holiness. It was starting to bug me. Talk about vain repetitions...

 

Anyways. I gotta go. I don't really remember what else happened this week anyway. It was good though! Sorry I'm so boring. Life just flies by at a million miles an hour. Love you!

June 11, 2012- Howdy Partners!

Dear Family,

 

Our schedule is kinda crazy today so I have to email you early this morning. You probably won't email me before I get this sent off, but that's okay. But I did get the package you sent me! Thanks so much! I flippin' love the tie. I wore it yesterday to church with my blue suit. I am one classy guy ;) And thanks for the card reader. I would be attaching pictures right now, but my camera's charging. Haha maybe someday you'll get some pictures from me. Overall it was just an excellent birthday. I got more letters than I have at any other time my whole mission (that's not saying a lot), so I feel loved. A member baked me a banana cake and bought me lunch too. The banana cake was just the way we made it back home! It was awesome.

 

It's been quite a good week for the work as well. We picked up a couple of new investigators through members. Let me just say right now - member referrals are THE BEST. The first one's name is Shelby. Shelby is the girlfriend of Bishop Hoffman's son, Cody. Cody just barely got home from a mission, so he kinda laid down the law when they got together. Surprisingly, Shelby has come to church 4 weeks in a row now and is very interested in learning more. She's told Cody that she is learning for herself, and not for him. We haven't officially started teaching her yet, but we will soon. The other new investigator is Heath. Heath is the friend of a member in the 2nd ward, but he'll be moving into our ward soon so that's why we're teaching him. He's just a bit older than me. We first met Heath when he helped us move some stuff at the member's home. He didn't say much to us and I have to admit that I judged him unfairly. First of all, he's absolutely ripped (like body builder hugeness), so I thought that he was rollin' the 'roids. Secondly, he has tattoos wrapping up his arms. I mean, I've taught people like that before, but I just thought to myself that maybe he wasn't the best guy if ya know what I mean. But to my pleasant surprise, he's totally a great guy! Heath informed the member that he was interested in learning about our church, so we met with him yesterday after church. He's golden! He's a really shy guy and he's very nice and well-mannered. And he's very much searching for truth in his life right now. He just wants to be good and do good. Boy did I feel stupid. I already love the guy so much! He said he'd be baptized when he came to know that it's true. He grew up in a Christian church, and his dad is throwing all sorts of anti at him. I used to get mad at that kind of thing, but nowadays it just makes me sad. So many people are filled with misinformation. Google certainly doesn't help. We're going to meet with Heath next Sunday, and I really think that we could set a date with him. Hooray!

 

It sure feels good to be busy. Some missionaries like to joke around and say comments like, "Elder Atkin, do you guys get to just sit around and be lazy 'cause you're zone leaders? That must be so cool!" I glady reply, "Nah, dude. I worked my butt of today." And it's very true. Elder Quinn and I hate to sit around. We've been contacting a lot of old referrals and former investigators. We've done quite a bit of tracting already. Yesterday we were seeing people from the time we left church until bedtime. By golly, I'm so tired! I was nodding off multiple times during church. Church is still super good though. The members here are so awesome! I still don't know a lot of them, but there are some powerhouse testimonies in Joplin.

 

Amber is set to be baptized this Saturday! Elder Lund interviewed her before Frankie's Eagle court of honor and she was totally ready. She still struggles with some concepts because of her mild special needs, but she knows the Gospel is true. After her interview we attended Frankie's court of honor and I got to sit in the Eagle's nest for the first time in a while. It was a picture perfect program. To everyone's surprise, Frankie announced at the end that he had received his mission call in the mail the day before and that he was going to open it with all of us. Everyone flipped out with excitement. And guess where he's going? Pocatello Idaho Spanish speaking!! I was ridiculously awesome. He's already stoked to go. What a great young man!

 

Pretty soon we're going to start a 40-day fast with the ward to help with the missionary effort. Elder Quinn and I are confident that miracles can happen if we have a family fasting for our success each day for 40 days. It's going to be epic! After the 40 days we're planning on having an invitation Sunday where everyone invites their friends and really good speakers are picked. Joplin's going to be on fire with missionary work!

Dear Family,

 

I'm so tired of not getting that much time to email! I guess you'll just have to be okay with my short emails until we figure something else out. 4 elders and 1 computer with limited time equals lame sauce. Sorry! And don't worry about not getting an email to me. It's okay :) I knew that you might be busy. I'm okay, I'm not a baby haha

 

Today Elder Quinn and I are heading down to Tulsa for Zone Leader Council at the mission home. It'll be fun to pass through Owasso and see some familiar sites. Do you know what's cool? There are 3 other elders from my MTC district that are zone leaders right now. Yeah, that's how awesome we are ;) It ought to be an interesting ZLC this time around because President Merkley is going home at the end of this transfer. I'm so sad! He's seriously one of the most spiritually strong people I've ever met. He's very quoteable and very likeable. Some elders complain about him behind his back, but nobody will deny how amazing he really is. President Shumway will have big shoes to fill.

 

The work is going well here in Joplin. There is SO much potential! I'm just waiting for things to burst wide open. We just keep getting caught up in zone leader duties and service and such. But I really have a feeling that this week will be a good one. We handed out about 40 Book of Mormons at church the past couple of weeks and a lot of members are committing to talk to friends. Cool stuff! Tons of members have friends/family that they're working on. Amber is probably going to make it to her baptism on the 16th, so we're stoked about that. We met with Tom this week and went over some of his concerns on being baptized. He really opened up and we were able to talk comfortably. Tom's had multiple baptismal dates, but we think that he'll come around soon. Heck, he's attended church for 3 years in a row now!

 

Hmmm... what else is going on around here... I don't really know what to say. Especially since I don't have much time left. Just know that I'm happy when I'm busy and I'm so so so excited about the work in this area. So many cool people! Joplin has some ghetto parts, but it also has some ridiculously rich neighborhoods. I like to be a part of both worlds. Elder Quinn and I are getting along quite well, despite my snoring. Gee wizz I flippin' hate snoring! It's kind of embarassing. Besides that, we're best pals.

 

Don't worry too much about my B-Day. If you send anything at all, send my Jon Schmidt CDs (and maybe some new ones), I could use a yellow or orange tie (I don't have any of that color), and an SD card-reader would be great. I just want pictures of the family too! I know that I haven't really sent any lately, but if I had a card reader I totally could. I just wish I could have a hug from y'all for my birthday, that's all...

 

The Gospel is true, my fellow family members. It's sure great to be serving the Lord at this time and I just hope that I'm being the best I can be. Pray that your son won't be afraid to share his testimony. I still get scared! Especially when it seems like I'm not having success.

May 28, 2012- Busy Busy

Dear Family,

 

Once again, I don't have a lot of time to email you. Sorry! It's like I said - we don't have library cards and there's four of us wanting to use some members' computers.

 

So what's up? How's life in North Carolina? And how's the job searching going, Rachel? I hope everything is well with the fam. I doing great here in Joplin. It's busy busy busy. To be quite honest, we've only made it to bed on time twice during my stay so far. There is so much going on! Not all of it is good, though. There's a lot of drama for us to deal with as zone leaders. We've already had to do an emergency exchange in the middle of the night because of some missionaries that hated each other. I was worried they were going to kill each other. We had a long talk and tried to work things out peacefully, but I just wanted to tell them to grow up. I haven't loved all of my companions equally so far on my mission, but at least I'm mature enough to just let things slide and try to get along with them. It's easier said than done, but I really don't think it's that hard. Just grow up!

 

Currently we have two investigators with baptismal dates in the Joplin 1st ward. Tom probably isn't going to make his date, but Amber is doing well. Her date is for the 16th of June. Her and her family (who is semi-active) came to church yesterday, so things are going well in that respect. Speaking of church - we've got 5 hours of church to go to these days. Don't get me wrong, I love church. But I was sure getting sleepy yesterday around 3:00. Elders quorum in the Webb City ward was soooooooooooo boooooooooooring. I tried to make comments so I wouldn't fall asleep. There are some really cool members out here though. Haha I tell people I'm from Utah and they tell me that they live in the REAL Zion. But in all seriousness, I truly believe that the Lord is gathering people in Missouri. With the temple dedication, the new stake center being built, and the recent tornado, a lot of people have interest in the church. We have tons and tons of referrals to sort through when we get the time in the future. So much is happening here! The only frustration though, is all the less-actives/non-members that say they'll come to church when the stake center is done in September. Excuses, excuses...

 

This past Tuesday was the Unity Walk (or something like that) in Joplin on the anniversary of the tornado. Most of the elders in our zone came in to Joplin so we could represent the church as "the walk" came past the stake center. We all wore suits even though it was like 90 degrees and really humid. I was dying! But it was still really cool though as us and hundreds of members clad in "Mormon Helping Hands" shirts welcomed the people participating in "the walk" with cheers and applause in front of the stake center. Thousands of people crammed in to watch a big ol' crane put the steeple on top of the stake center. When the steeple was set, everyone cheered and then moved on down the street. A lot of people asked us if they could take pictures of us in our suits. We were quite the sight :) It was a great missionary opportunity. We ended up walking the rest of the way to the hospital where there was a special program remembering those who died. It was so cool! It's my hope that the first Sunday the stake center is open that it will be packed to the brim and that I'll be there. That's the plan.

 

So. Life is good. I'm happy. I'm busy. The church is true! I love feeling the same spirit in whatever sacrament meeting I attend. I already love the members of both wards and I can't wait to teach all of their friends ;) Elder Quinn and I are already having a good time together. He thinks he'll leave this next transfer so I'm going to try and help him leave on a high note. I still don't know a lot about our investigators, the area, and such, but that will come with time.

P.S. You should see downtown Joplin. It's so awesome! It's got that old town feel. There's a few big churches around here, but mostly there's just hundreds of small churches. Many of them non-denominational. Very religious community.

 

 

May 21, 2012 - Joplin

Dear Family,

 

I'm in Joplin! And I love it! So much has changed since last Monday. It seems like an eternity since I was in Owasso. It's been a little stressful with all of the changes, but I like change. I love Owasso so much, but I just needed something new. Elder Quinn is a super cool guy from South Jordan, Utah, and he's been in Joplin a long time now. We're already pals, and I'll be sure to get you pictures as soon as I can. I still don't have a card reader, but I'll be able to plug the camera into the computer here. We live in a pretty nice duplex in Duquesne - a town just outside of Joplin. It's right next to the path of destruction from the tornado last year. The destruction is still pretty obvious around here. Most everything is cleaned up, but there's quite a clear-cut path. Trees are mostly gone and houses are starting to be built, but right outside of the path are tons of trees and many houses. Everyone tells me that in the path of the tornado everything was destroyed, but right outside barely anything was touched. Crazy! I've already heard a few stories, but I'm sure i'll hear a few more. Did you know that the hospital (St. John's) was literally picked up and turned a few degrees? It's a huge, multi-story concrete building! I don't know if that's true, but I've already heard it a couple of times. The Stake Center is still in the process of being built, but it should be done by September. Hopefully I'll be here for the opening. Tomorrow is the one year anniversary of the tornado and they're putting the steeple on top as part of a city-wide event. It'll be an awesome missionary opportunity. I'm stoked! There is SO much going on here. I've been busy ever since the minute I got here.

 

I told you that I covered 3 wards last Sunday, but now we only cover two: Joplin 1st and Webb City. We originally covered 2nd ward, but they just put in Elder Pope and Elder Lund here. The 2nd ward has been praying for missionaries for about a year now, and they finally got them. Haha I'm pretty sure Elder Pope and Elder Lund are heroes right now :) We went to their ward with them yesterday for a confirmation, and everyone was so happy to see them. Do you know what's crazy? While the stake center is being built, the 2nd ward meets in the local Community of Christ building and the 1st ward meets in the Carthage building. It was really interesting to have sacrament meeting in an RLDS chapel, but the spirit was still there. I guess the 2nd ward is already used to it.

 

Being zone leader isn't all that it's hyped up to be, but it's still good. Our phone is ringing constantly, and we've already dealt with a lot of drama in my stay here. The church is still true though, and there's a lot more great people. Yesterday I met a family who were originally from Cache Valley. It was fun to talk about Logan and Gossners and such. I heard that Gossners was bought by Schreiber. Is that true? It was strange to pass by a Schreiber the other day. I can't believe I worked in that place...

 

I wish I had more time to tell y'all everything, but I don't. We don't have library cards because we don't technically live in Joplin, so we use a member's computer. Hopefully we'll get more time next Monday. I just hope you know that I love it here in Joplin, I love being busy, I love hearing tornado stories, I love Elder Quinn, and I love the gospel. I'm doing quite fine.

 

Happy birthday to Dad! And happy anniversary on Sunday! Thanks for being awesome. Pray that I'll be able to bear the load of being a zone leader. I'm so lost and uninformed these days. But it's all good :)

May 14, 2012 - The day after mothers day....

Dear Family,

 

So what's new?? Haha just kidding :) Yesterday was the best day ever! What a blessing to be able to talk to my family. I hope that I didn't sound too weird and that I was able to say everything I was supposed to say. It just felt so good to hear your voices. Talking to April was a blast as well. She's doing awesome and I swear our phone call was 2 minutes long. Our conversation was very random, but it's because we had so much to say. April is so excited for me to serve in the wards of a lot of people she met in Kansas City. We're in the same temple district! For some reason that seems significant...

 

It's been kinda weird since I got my transfer call to be zone leader in Joplin. I thought that I would be super depressed, but I haven't been. Sure I'm a little bit sad, but I've realized that I'm just one of many elders that will ever come through Owasso. Many members here have their favorite missionaries from the past, but they're used to us coming and going. I've also come to realize that the missionary effort here is Elm Creek's missionary effort. The missionaries are here to teach and bring souls closer to Christ, but it's very much the ward's effort. We're just here to help. Lately, I've been asking families how we can help them in their missionary work. It's good to commit families to do hard things, but sometimes people just need us to be there to help them. All good members of the church should have their own mission plan and their own commitments to do hard things. Do the Atkin's have a mission plan? Do we think of our own hard things to do, or do we wait for the missionaries to give it to us? I don't say that to be mean, but I like the idea of us ALL being missionaries.

 

This week Elder Ivie and I plan to see as many people as possible. I might've mentioned to y'all the "blazin' challenge" that we made up. We want to sweep through Owasso and see as many people as we can in a short period of time. I've done things similar in the past, but we want to see everybody - members, less-actives, investigators, you name it. That way I can see everyone I want to see before I leave, and we can get in homes that we normally don't go in to. We're confident that it will be a few days with many miracles. Time to blaze Owasso! I want to leave this place on a high note.

 

Though Sis. Hanna doesn't want to see us anymore, she came to church yesterday. I actually was so happy to see her. We talked a little bit and then I informed her that I would be transferred. I could see the sadness in her eyes. She wants to be rebaptized so bad, and she wanted me to do it. I really hope that me leaving doesn't discourage her even more so she gives up. She's been doing so good! At times it seems impossible for her to come back into fellowship. She's faltered before. She's tried coming back like 5 times, but every time she'd fall short and go back to smoking. The paperwork must take a long time to process through Salt Lake City because Bishop Carroll has said that it will take months. I'm so sad! I hope that I can come back someday and see her as an endowed member of the church. She says that she'll never go back to the temple, but I know that the Spirit would work on her after her baptism. She'd totally go. I wish I knew more about these kind of things...

 

I haven't told David Britt that I'm leaving yet. I know he'll be sad! He's still struggling to come to church these days, but we've gained his trust. Not that Elder Ivie's a bad missionary, it's just that D Britt is my man. I know I'll come back someday and go fishin' and noodlin' and spoonbill snaggin'. Dad, you'd love him :) He wants to come to Utah again someday and go fishing in the mountain lakes and streams. He's the ULTIMATE fisherman. A lot of people in Oklahoma are that way. I was surprised at that. There are so many different kinds of fish out here, and they can get HUGE. Big ol' catfish. And I love fried catfish these days. Dad, do you go fishing much? I hope you know that we're going to go all the time when I get back home. Our mission president won't allow us!

 

I'm also sad to leave Tom and Belinda. As of late, they've made it a little more obvious that they're not interested. They're looking for a church, but not ours :( In the next couple of days we're going to go over and get a picture with them. I'm going to share my testimony and ask them to come to church one more time. I'm sure they'll listen because they'll miss me haha :) Jim still says he'll get to church one of these days, but he's getting closer. He told us this last week that he's been praying about it big time and that he's going to make a decision soon. I don't want to miss out on that! Darn...

 

Lately I've been studying the life of Christ more in depth. I try to imagine myself being in those situations where he healed the sick and performed miracles. To have been there when he cleansed the temple?!?! Epic!! I wouldn't want to get in his way. I'm excited to read more in the future. The scriptures are becoming more and more fun to read these days. Like Harry Potter. Only better!
